Is there a truly free WordPress booking plugin?

“Free” covers several models: Lite version, paid add-ons, fee on payments. How to tell them apart and what to check before choosing.

Yes, there are free WordPress booking plugins, but the word “free” does not always mean the same thing: a cut-down version of a paid product, a free core extended by add-ons you buy, or a complete tool funded by a fee on payments. Before choosing, you need to check what is free, what becomes paid and at what point. GDA Kraft Booking, published by Global Digital Agency, follows the third model: all its features are free with a free Kraft GDA account, and only payments collected online carry a service fee.

What does “free” mean for a WordPress plugin?

There are four main business models. None is better in absolute terms: each one moves the cost to a different place.

ModelWhat is freeWhat is paidWhen you pay
Freemium (Lite / Pro)A basic version published on wordpress.orgThe advanced features of the Pro versionAs soon as you need a Pro feature, often through an annual licence
Core + add-onsThe plugin's coreEach add-on (payment, sync, languages…)Add-on by add-on
Fee per transactionAll featuresA percentage of payments collected onlineOnly when you get paid
Free, funded another wayEverythingNothing, or a donation, or a related serviceNever, but long-term maintenance depends on the funding

Freemium is a model where a free version acts as an entry point to a more complete paid version. A fee per transaction is a percentage taken from each payment, proportional to your actual activity.

What should you ask before installing?

A booking plugin quickly becomes the heart of your business: switching tools after six months of bookings takes time. Ask these questions from the start.

  1. Is online payment included in the free version? This is the most common limit of Lite versions. Check which provider is offered (Stripe, PayPal, Square…) and whether it suits you.
  2. Is calendar sync included? If you also rent on Airbnb or Booking.com, iCal sync is essential to avoid double bookings.
  3. Is there a quantity limit? Number of properties, services, staff members, bookings per month.
  4. What happens if you stop paying? With an annual licence, does the plugin keep working without updates, or does it stop?
  5. Who bears the visible cost? A fee can be paid by you or shown to the customer. That makes a difference to your margin.
  6. Where is customer data stored? On your site, or with the publisher?
  7. Is the plugin maintained? Date of the last update, compatibility with your WordPress version, responsiveness of support.

Practical tip: draw up a table of your real needs (payment, iCal, number of units or services, page builder) and tick, for each plugin, what is covered without paying. The comparisons in this help centre give you a starting point.

How is GDA Kraft Booking funded?

GDA Kraft Booking offers no Pro version and no paid add-on. Two free editions are available:

EditionWhat it includesAccount required
Complete GDA edition (downloaded from the Kraft GDA customer area, Downloads, .zip file to install with Plugins › Add New › Upload Plugin)Everything, with no add-on to install: accommodations and units, rates, seasons, calendar, iCal sync, manual bookings and booking requests, Kraft Pay online payment, appointment booking, Kraft Console, design modules, Kraft Fields, Kraft Lang multilingual support, AI controlFree Kraft GDA account, no bank card
Free core (WordPress.org edition, available for free on WordPress.org: Plugins › Add New Plugin, search for “GDA Kraft Booking”)Accommodations, rates, seasons, calendar, iCal sync, manual bookings and booking requests. No appointment mode, no online payment (Kraft Pay, Stripe), no Kraft Console: these features belong to the separate GDA Kraft Booking Connect add-on, available from Downloads in the customer area; or install the complete GDA edition insteadNone

A holiday cottage that receives requests and is paid by bank transfer needs nothing more than the free core, with no account. Funding rests on two things:

  • a service fee of 0.9% per transaction collected online, reduced to 0.45% until 30 June 2027 under the launch offer. It is shown to the payer on a “Service fee” line and deducted automatically;
  • a partner banner displayed at the top of Kraft Booking › Dashboard, in the WordPress admin, never on your public site (see The partner banner).

Offline payments you record yourself (bank transfer, cheque, cash) and bookings imported through iCal carry no fees. Stripe's processing fees apply on top for online payments; you pay them yourself, directly to Stripe, according to its pricing. Global Digital Agency only receives the service fee. Full details are on the Pricing page and in The 0.9% service fee.

  • GDA Kraft Booking is in public beta 0.1; version 1.0 is planned for June 2027. Read Kraft Booking in beta: roadmap before going live.
  • Online payment runs through Stripe (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay) via Kraft Pay; PayPal is not among the features announced to date.
  • The WordPress.org edition (free core) has no online payment, appointment mode or Kraft Console; for these, the complete GDA edition, downloaded from the customer area, works with a free Kraft GDA account linked to the site (see Why create a Kraft GDA account?).
  • Native Bricks integration is coming soon; in the meantime, shortcodes work in the Bricks Shortcode element.

Frequently asked questions

Can a free plugin be enough for professional use?

Yes, if it covers your essential needs without a paid add-on: online payment, calendar sync, reliable invoices and emails. Check maintenance and support above all, more than the price.

Do I pay the GDA Kraft Booking service fee?

It is shown to the payer on a “Service fee” line on the payment page. It amounts to 0.9% per transaction, reduced to 0.45% until 30 June 2027, and is refunded pro rata when you issue a refund.

Do I have to pay anything to try it?

No. The plugin and the Kraft GDA account are free, and the account does not require a bank card. Fees only apply to payments actually collected online.

How do I compare several plugins in practice?
